Go to the Beach
Wrightsville Beach is one of the best beaches on the east coast.
Yep, I said it. And I’ll stand by it.
Wrightsville Beach is famous for its wide, white-sand beaches that stretch for miles and beautiful blue waters. Spend a beach day soaking up the sun, swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, or simply hunting for seashells.
Insider Tip: Wrightsville Beach is extremely popular amongst locals and tourists. If you are coming in for a day trip and not staying on the island, get there early! Parking is VERY limited and it’s expensive. Make sure to mind your meter, or you will get a ticket. (Ask me how I know!)
Expect a lot of traffic. The main bridge to Wrightsville Beach is a drawbridge and goes up regularly on the hour. Pack your patience because you’re going to need it.
Be prepared for some fun in the sun! Don’t forget a thing with my ultimate beach day packing list.
Walk The John T. Nesbitt Loop
“The Loop” at Wrightsville Beach is the perfect place to walk, run, or bike on the island. What was once a local spot for exercise has become a popular attraction for visitors to Wilmington.
The whole family can enjoy the beautiful views along the trail – bring your four-legged friends along too- just make sure they’re on leashes and you clean up after them. Need a break? Stop for ice cream at The Original Ice Cream Stand or explore the Harbor Way Garden along the Loop.
How long does it take to walk the loop at Wrightsville Beach?
The Loop at Wrightsville Beach is 2.5 miles. On average it takes us around an hour walking at a leisurely pace with our pups. Of course, if you’re walking for exercise, it can be done much faster.
Get Active
Wrightsville Beach is a prime destination for those seeking outdoor adventures.
With its pristine waters and breathtaking scenery, it’s the perfect place to indulge in paddle boarding, kayaking, and even parasailing. Paddleboarding is a great way to explore the coastline while getting a workout in at the same time. Kayaking allows you to venture deeper into the waters and get up close with marine life. And if you’re feeling adventurous, parasailing will give you a bird’s eye view of the beach and ocean.
Looking for more water adventures? Some more fun Wrightsville Beach outdoor activities include scuba diving, water skiing, wake boarding, and sailing.
Getting outdoors is one of the best things to do in Wrightsville Beach because there is literally something to do for every age and ability here!
Wrightsville Beach Museum of History
Curious about the history of Wrightsville Beach?
Then be sure to visit the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History. This small museum showcases the history of the beach community through exhibits, artifacts, and a variety of different experiences.
Offering educational programs and events for visitors of all ages, the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History is a fun but quick Wrightsville Beach attraction.
Make sure to check the website before visiting. At the time of publication, the Museum is only open Thursday through Sunday.
Johnny Mercer’s Pier
Johnny Mercer’s Fishing Pier is a must-visit Wrightsville Beach attraction for fishing enthusiasts and beach-goers alike.
The pier offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, and visitors can fish for a variety of species including flounder, Spanish mackerel, and bluefish. The pier also features a tackle shop, restaurant, gift shop, and ample seating for guests to relax and enjoy the scenery.
There is a small fee to walk out onto the pier. At the time of publication, adult admission is $2 and children are $1. Rod rentals and fishing passes are available as well.
Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the stunning sunrises and sunsets from this iconic landmark.
Surfing at Wrightsville Beach
Surfing is kind of a big deal at Wrightsville Beach. And definitely one of the best Wrightsville Beach activities.
With consistent waves and great weather year round, there’s a big surf community here. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, you will find surfers of all skill levels are welcome.
Doesn’t matter your age, beginners can take lessons from one of the several surf schools located along the beach. Make sure to check the local surf report before hitting the waves, and be mindful of other surfers to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
After a long day of surfing, grab a bite to eat at one of the local beach restaurants for some delicious seafood and a cold drink.
Catch the Sunrise or Sunset
It’s no secret I’m obsessed with sunsets, though I must admit that I also adore sunrises as well.
Fortunately, Wrightsville Beach offers stunning views of both the sunrise and sunset over the water. And I try to make it a point to witness these breathtaking moments whenever possible.
The South End of Wrightsville is my favorite sunset spot on Wrightsville Beach, but keep in mind that this is a popular area with limited parking spaces. To secure your spot, arrive early and join others who are waiting for that magical moment. Be sure to read my Wilmington sunset guide for all the details especially if you’re out and about around town.
Fun Fact: This is a popular spot for photographers and where I had my wedding portrait taken! Share your epic sunset photos with one of our fun sunset captions!
Another extremely popular option for catching the sunset is to take a sunset sail tour! Check out current prices and availability HERE!
Roberts Grocery
Robert’s Grocery, originally established in 1919, is a Wrightsville Beach institution.
As the only grocery store on the island, you can expect higher prices at Robert’s, but you can’t beat the convenience. You cannot miss out on trying their famous homemade chicken salad, pimento cheese, and cookies, but they have all your standard grocery essentials too. (The little deli in the back is fantastic as well.)
My daughter and I are also huge fans of Adapt Kitchen and Juice Bar which is attached to Robert’s.
Even if you’re not staying on the island, Robert’s is worth a quick stop while you’re in Wrightsville Beach.
Wrightsville Beach Mailbox
One of the most unique and fun Wrightsville Beach attractions is the Wrightsville Beach Mailboxes.
Kindred Spirit Mailboxes, made famous in a Nicholas Sparks book, can be found along the Carolina Coast, including at Sunset Beach and on Wrightsville Beach.
Romantics can’t resist the stories of people who share their hearts’ secrets in these mailboxes. The original Wrightsville Beach Mailbox is located in the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History, but there are two mailboxes at the north end of Wrightsville Beach, where people leave notes and letters.
The mailboxes can be accessed from the last beach access after Shell Island.
Insider Tip: Make sure to wear shoes on your walk to the Wrightsville Beach mailbox. The sand can get extremely hot in the summer and the sand spurs will get you year round.
Grab a Coffee on Wrightsville Beach
If you’re a little coffee obsessed (like me), you have several options to get your caffeine fix on Wrightsville! Check out these fun coffee shops in Wrightsville Beach:
- The Workshop
- SUNdays – on the south end of Wrightsville near the Crystal Pier

Masonboro Island
No doubt about it, Masonboro Island is pretty freaking special.
Masonboro Island is a pristine and undeveloped barrier island located off the coast of Wilmington. It’s a popular destination for both locals and visitors seeking a peaceful and secluded beach experience. The island offers miles of white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and a variety of outdoor activities such as fishing, kayaking, and camping.
Visitors can only access the island by boat or kayak, and there are no facilities on the island, so it’s important to come prepared with everything you need.
If you’re looking for a completely unique North Carolina experience, then you have to make plans to visit Masonboro Island. It is by far one of the best things to do in Wrightsville Beach NC!
Don’t have your own boat? No worries, just book a boat tour to Masonboro Island. Check current rates and availability HERE!
The Oceanic Restaurant & Crystal Pier
The Oceanic Restaurant is just one of those iconic Wrightsville Beach things.
Upon first impressions, you might think it’s just a tourist trap. But the food is actually delicious and the ocean views can’t be beat. Take some time to check out the historic Crystal Pier, try your hand at some fishing, or catch seasonal live music from the The Oceanic.
There’s nothing like walking straight down to the beach for a sunset walk after a delicious meal.
Insider Tip: The Oceanic is the only oceanfront dining on Wrightsville Beach.
Wrightsville Beach Park
Wrightsville Beach Park is a great destination for some outdoor fun away from the beach.
Located in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, the park offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including basketball courts, tennis courts, pickle ball courts, and an inclusive playground for children.
Visitors can also enjoy a picnic with family and friends under covered shelters or gain easy access to the Loop. With public restrooms and parking available, Wrightsville Beach Park is a great stop when you’re looking for a fun alternative to the beach.
Experience the Intracoastal Waterway
There’s more to Wrightsville than just the beach!
If you love being out on the water, then you’ve come to right place. The Intracoastal Waterway is a boater’s paradise and a huge attraction to both locals and visitors.
Insider Tip: This is NOT the place to take a boat out on your own for the very first time. With strong currents, a lot of boating traffic, and shallow waters, if you’re not an experienced boater, charter a boat with a captain. Trust me, there’s steep learning curve here.
That being said, there are tons of options for chartering boats, scenic cruises, and fun water excursions. Want to take a sunset cruise? No problem! Want to go over to Masonboro Island? No problem! Want a luxury yacht to take you out for the day? No problem.
Fishing is also a pretty big deal around here! A Wrightsville Beach fishing trip would be an experience to remember! Check out tour prices and availability HERE!
Mott’s Channel Seafood
If you’re looking to buy fresh seafood on Wrightsville Beach, then you must go to Mott’s Channel.
Every day, local fishermen deliver their new and fresh catch to their docks, including everything from fresh fish to oysters, clams, shrimp, mussels, and more.
Mott’s Channel Seafood is a favorite amongst both locals and tourists and has become a Wrightsville Beach attraction all on it’s own.
Bird Watching
Wrightsville Beach is home to a variety of bird species, making it a great spot for bird watching. Keep an eye out for ospreys, pelicans, egrets, and herons as you explore the area.
Don’t be surprised to see areas protected during nesting season!
Palm Tree Island
Spoiler Alert: Palm Tree Island isn’t isn’t really an island.
It’s a sand bar.
Palm Tree Island is a small sandbar located on the Intracoastal Waterway in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. The island is named for its distinctive fake palm tree American flag. Accessible only by boat, Palm Tree Island is a popular spot for boaters, paddle boarders, and kayakers to stop and relax, hang out, or take a swim.
Catch the Flotilla
What is the Wrightsville Beach Flotilla?
It’s basically a boat parade. Followed by the most epic fireworks show in town. And our favorite way to kick off the holiday season each year.
Every year, typically the weekend after Thanksgiving, thousands of people gather on Wrightsville Beach from the land and by water to watch the the boat parade. Boats of all sizes go all out with music, decorations, Santa, and more to compete for the title of the best in show! It’s a big holiday party and one we never miss.
Insider Tip: If you are watching on land, get there early and park at the Municipal Complex. Then walk towards the beach, to the bridge, to have a good view for the Flotilla.
The Flotilla is by far one of the coolest seasonal Wrightsville Beach activities.
Hang Out a Beach Bar
Wrightsville Beach, NC has a vibrant and exciting bar scene that’s perfect for those looking to unwind after a day at the beach.
For a laid-back classic beach bar, head over to Lager Heads or Red Dogs. If you’re looking for live music and a fun atmosphere, The Palm Room is the place to be. And for a more low key cocktail and sophisticated ambiance, check out The Oceanic. Other popular spots include Bluewater and Poe’s Tavern.
