Travel Kids Tell All
Travel Kids Tell All is an ongoing series on the blog sharing children’s perspective and thoughts on their travels. I’ve found that little travelers provide very honest feedback and can often tell you “how it really is.” If you are interested in interviewing your kids and being featured on More than Main Street, please contact me or leave a comment below!
Our first guest post featured on Travel Kids Tell All is Venice, Italy!
Alexei and her family are from Great Britain and have traveled extensively with her six year old son, Bean. They’re so fortunate to have traveled to Venice six different times! Her son may still be young but he is quite well traveled! Follow Alexei and her family travels on Instagram It’s Not all About Passports and her future blog!
Our 3 Day Venice Itinerary
Day One: Travel to the canal to Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square), go up the tower and see the frescos, wander around the alleyways, and of course eat some ice gelato!
Day Two: Visit the Rialto Bridge, watch the gondolas and boats travel up and down the canals.
Day Three: Visit the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore for some of the best views of Venice. Check out the bell tower and art while you are there.
If you are planning a trip to Italy and have time to visit more than just Venice, be sure to check out this awesome 10 day Italy itinerary! Alternately, if you’re short on time, here’s a perfect one day Venice itinerary!
Travel Kids Tell All: Venice Edition
(Bean was age six at the time of this interview.)
What was your favorite thing about Venice?
There are too many wonderful things about Venice to simply choose one. Where do I start? The romantic language, the amazing food including the best gelato in the world, and of course the architecture and history.
Can you share your least favorite thing about Venice?
I have heard people say that the canal can give off a bad smell but I have never witnessed it. I would say the crowds of tourists, so we like to get there early or go during the weekdays to avoid the crowds especially on the Rialto Bridge.
What was the weirdest thing about Venice?
The weirdest thing is that when it floods, nothing stops. The local district just puts out temporary walkways over the flooded streets. When you see tourists buying bag wellies to cover the feet it is a site to behold! I’m not that touristy to do that though…hey I don’t even wear a waterproof poncho!
What was your favorite food we ate in Venice?
There is simply too much good food in Venice! A good tip is to stay away from the main tourist trap restaurants as they are always expensive and the food is not as good. Instead, go down the little alleyways and get lost. We have always found the best places this way.
Ok…if I had to narrow it down, it would be a plate of carpaccio of beef with parmesan and rocket salad. I bet you all thought I was going to say pasta or pizza!
Tell me one thing you learned while we were in Venice?
The transport is amazing and whether it is trains, planes, boats, ferries, gondolas or automobiles, it’s an easy place to get around.
What would you recommend to other families traveling to Venice with kids?
There is a lot of walking, so good walking shoes are needed. Forget the map…you will get lost, but don’t worry, that is all part of the fun. There are a lot of steps as you go over many of the bridges, but nothing makes it too difficult.
Would you like to go back to Venice?
In a heartbeat!
Thank You!

I love reading about Alexei and her family adventure in Venice!! Looking forward to many more post like this one!
Thanks Flor! I’m super excited about this series!
We want to take our four year old to Venice next year! We have Greece on our agenda this year, but we want him to experience these amazing places before they may not be around anymore.
What a fun series! I would love to go back to Venice. I loved that feeling of purposefully getting lost too. 🙂
Oooh how exciting! I haven’t been to Venice in ten years and would love to go again someday. So many people I know discourage bringing children on international trips but I think the exploration can be so good for them!
Wow, this looks like so much fun. We are still to go on an international vacation with our son, this blog post is the inspiration I needed.
Your 6 year old is so well-spoken!! What a sweet idea to document your children’s travels through their perspectives! I remember travelling at 7 years old to London, and my mom wrote a travel journal for me everyday — I wish I still had it!
It has been years since I’ve visited Venice. And I can’t wait to go back Italy is one of my favorite countries.

Ah Venice, I have fond memories of taking the fairy transit all the way to the beach. Beautiful city to spend time in!
