If you’re looking for Southern charm, walkable adventures, and a whole lot of fun — a weekend getaway to Savannah, Georgia checks every single box…and then some!
With moss-draped oaks, historic architecture, riverfront views, and a cocktail culture that lets you take your drink to-go (yes, really), this city brings the vibes.
We’ve been to Savannah several times now, and while I love traveling with kids, I’ll be honest — Savannah shines brightest as an adults-only weekend escape. Between the nightlife, rooftop bars, and open-container freedom, it’s no wonder this place is a favorite for bachelorette parties and birthday getaways. (Seriously — we lost count.)
That said, you can absolutely make this a family-friendly trip, especially if you mix in parks, historic sites, and beach time on Tybee Island. But if you’re in the mood for cocktails, cobblestones, and cool vibes — this is your city.
Fun Things to Do in Savannah
Savannah may be laid-back, but it’s far from boring. Whether you’re after history, relaxation, or a bit of nightlife, this city delivers. Here are some of the best things to do in Savannah for an unforgettable weekend getaway:
Forsyth Park
Start your visit with a stroll through Forsyth Park. It’s iconic, picturesque, and perfect for people-watching. Grab a coffee and admire the famous fountain — it’s one of the most photographed spots in the city.
While you’re wandering be sure to check out any of Savannah’s 22 historic squares. Each with its own unique character, shaded by moss-draped oaks and surrounded by centuries-old architecture, you’ll come across statues, fountains, and cozy benches.
INSIDER TIP: If you’re searching for the famous Forrest Gump bench, where Tom Hanks’ character shared his life story over a box of chocolates, it’s no longer actually in Chippewa Square. It is now housed in the Savannah History Museum.
SCAD Museum of Art
Savannah is home to SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design), and their museum features cutting-edge art exhibits in a beautifully restored railroad depot. This is a great midday break or rainy day activity.
Wormsloe Historic Site
If you’re up for a short drive, this historic estate offers a breathtaking live oak avenue that feels straight out of a movie. (It’s one of the most Instagrammed spots in Georgia — and for good reason.)
INSIDER TIP: If you’re specifically looking for these majestic tree lined drives, you can also find them in Charleston, SC and Wilmington, NC.
City Market & Broughton Street
Shop, snack, and sip your way through these two lively areas. City Market is more artsy and open-air, while Broughton Street is lined with trendy shops and classic Southern brands like The Paris Market and Savannah Bee Company.
Don’t skip Byrd’s Famous Cookies- you can sample as many as you want! But be forewarned, these little cookies are addictive! And if you still haven’t satisfied your sweet tooth, be sure to grab an ice cream cone at local favorite Leopold’s Ice Cream.
The American Prohibition Museum in Savannah offers a fascinating glimpse into the Prohibition era—and if you know where to look, end your visit at the hidden speakeasy tucked inside bringing the spirit of the 1920s to life with craft cocktails and vintage flair.
No weekend getaway to Savannah would be complete without a visit to The City Market and a walk down Broughton Street.
Visit The Book Lady Bookstore
Tucked just off Broughton Street, this indie bookstore is a total hidden gem. It’s cozy, curated, and packed with rare finds, local authors, and Southern literature. A perfect rainy day stop or mid-afternoon escape with a coffee in hand.
Take a Tour
You can’t go wrong with a walking tour in Savannah. Architectural tours are perfect for design buffs, ghost tours are a fun way to dive into Savannah’s spooky side, and food tours are a delicious way to get oriented (and full).
We love a good food tour and Savannah’s First Squares Culinary Tour didn’t disappoint!
If you’re looking for a bit of nature and adventure, try a sunset paddle with Moon River Kayak through the Lowcountry waterways. You’ll spot wildlife, soak in the golden hour glow, and get a totally different perspective of Savannah’s surrounding marshes. Tours launch from nearby islands like Tybee or Little Tybee.
Day Trip to Tybee Island
Just 30 minutes from downtown, Tybee Island is your go-to for beach time. It’s casual, relaxed, and makes for the perfect escape if you need some sand between your toes.
INSIDER TIP: We personally make Savannah a stop when we are road tripping south on I-95. If you are too, consider stopping on Jekyll Island about an hour south of Savannah. Driftwood Beach is one of the most unique and beautiful beaches in the south!
Wander the Riverwalk
I do love a Riverwalk.
And no trip to Savannah is complete without meandering along the Savannah River. Pop into shops, grab a drink to-go, or hop on a riverboat cruise for golden hour views.
Play a Round of Golf
If golf is your thing, you’ll find some beautiful courses nearby. Try The Club at Savannah Harbor or Wilmington Island Club for a scenic round.
Insider Highlight: St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah
If you really want to see Savannah go off, plan your trip around St. Patrick’s Day.
It’s one of the biggest celebrations in the country — second only to Chicago — and the whole city transforms into one giant green-tinted street party. There’s a massive parade, live music, and of course, plenty of festive drinks flowing through the historic district. Hotels and restaurants book up quickly, so plan early if you want to experience it!
Where to Stay in Savannah
JW Marriott Plant Riverside District
This hotel is a destination in itself. Think: luxe rooms, museum-like lobby filled with fossils and art, and the best riverfront location in town. It’s quirky, grand, and totally worth it. Plus they have an epic rooftop pool.
Airbnb on Broughton Street
If you prefer a more homey setup or are traveling with friends, there are tons of stylish Airbnbs right in the heart of the action. We stayed on the corner of Broughton and Barnard Streets and loved being able to walk everywhere — coffee shops, boutiques, and bars were all steps away.
Where to Eat in Savannah
Savannah’s food scene is rich, varied, and downright crave-worthy. From upscale chophouses to creative Southern fusion, here’s where we loved dining:
At the JW Marriott Plant Riverside District
This revitalized riverside area is a hub of energy, dining, and nightlife.
- Graffito Pizza – Chic industrial vibes and seriously good wood-fired pizza.
- Turbine Market & Cafe – Great for a casual bite or coffee break while people-watching.
- Stone & Webster Chophouse – A splurge-worthy dinner with a sleek, modern atmosphere. Make sure to make reservations here.
Other Must-Try Restaurants in Savannah
Y’all. Seriously. I’m still thinking about these meals.
- Cotton & Rye – A standout for creative Southern fare. The fried chicken is unforgettable.
- Husk – If you’re into farm-to-table dining with a Southern twist, this is a must. (Pssst…There’s also a location in Charleston if you can’t make it to this one!)
- Flock to the Wok – Asian fusion meets Savannah soul. Don’t skip the dumplings.
- Treylor Park – Quirky comfort food in a fun, laid-back setting. Try the PB&J chicken wings!
Where to Drink (and Soak Up the Views)
Thanks to Savannah’s open container law in the historic district, it’s totally legal to sip your drink while you stroll — just ask for a plastic cup when ordering.
- Savannah Tequila Company – Great margaritas, vibrant vibe, and a prime riverfront spot.
- Myrtle & Rose Rooftop Garden – Elegant, floral, and ideal for a girls’ night or date night.
- Electric Moon Skytop Lounge & The Moon Deck – Go for the views, stay for the playful party vibe.
- Rocks on the Roof – Cozy, classy, and a perfect place to unwind with a cocktail at sunset.
- The Little Crown by Pie Society – A hidden gem! This cozy British-style pub tucked behind the Pie Society bakery is full of character and pours a proper pint.
Brunch Spots Worth Waking Up For
A weekend getaway to Savannah Georgia isn’t complete without brunch! At least in my opinion, LOL.
- Goose Feathers Café & Bakery – Cozy and casual with great coffee, pastries, and egg dishes.
- Rhett – Located inside The Alida Hotel, this spot nails modern brunch in a stylish setting. Pro tip: make a reservation!
- The Collins Quarter – A standout for brunch lovers! Aussie-inspired dishes, great coffee, and an Instagram-worthy interior. There’s also a second location in Forsyth Park.
Savannah Tips & Tricks
- Bring your ID — always. Whether you’re 25 or 65, they will card you.
- Book tours and dinner reservations in advance, especially on weekends. Savannah gets busy fast, especially during spring and fall. We have yet to score reservations at The Olde Pink House…one day we’ll get there!
- Wear comfy shoes. Those beautiful cobblestone streets? Not friendly to heels.
- Go midweek for fewer crowds. If you can swing a Thursday-Saturday trip, it’s the sweet spot between lively and not too hectic.
- Transportation: Savannah is a walkable city, especially in the Historic District. However, for trips to Tybee Island or if you prefer, consider renting bicycles or using ride-sharing services.
Ready to fall in love with Savannah? Whether you’re sipping a cocktail under the oaks or toasting to sunset on a rooftop bar, this city knows how to deliver a good time with plenty of Southern grace.
Georgia is a super underrated state in my opinion! It is also home to some epic waterfalls, a fun winter destination, and an amazing southern road trip destination. It’s also an easy weekend trip from North Carolina and South Carolina!
